There have been several shows/movies that I’ve seen throughout the years that were filmed in LA and always had this fantastic shot of the city, with the building in view that I always assumed to be a church or synagogue. It was gorgeous. So as I was researching things to do in LA on a budget, I came across Griffith Observatory, which happens to be that gorgeous building that I always caught view of in TV shows and movies.
While visiting the observatory, I found the Griffith Park is the gem of LA. Whenever I return to LA, I will be spending a day at Griffith Park and ending the day with Griffith Observatory. If you’re wondering why you should visit Griffith Observatory, here are 5 reasons why!
5 Reasons to Visit Griffith Observatory
1 The View
Without a doubt, the #1 reason to visit Griffith Observatory is the view. You get the best view of Los Angeles from Griffith Observatory. Luckily for us the close at 9 PM, so getting a night-time view is realistic. Not only do you get a view of the city, but you also get a view of the Hollywood Hills (if wanting to hike the Hollywood Hills with kids, then check out THIS link).
2 FREE Admission
When traveling, a budget is always key. For myself, free is typically the realm that I stay in. When researching Griffith Observatory, I found that admission is FREE! Great view, great facility for no cost.
Done and done.
What’s even better, they offer free parking. Now, if you want an up close parking spot you’ll have to pay, but if you don’t mind making the trek up to the observatory for the winding road then you’re good. If headed there at night (which is the most popular time to go), I would recommend getting there early to gain a better parking spot.
3 Monthly Public Star Party
Not quite the stars you’re use to partying with in LA. Griffith Observatory’s public star party is a once a month gathering that they have where they have several telescopes available for you use for free. Along with the telescopes are knowledgeable astronomers who can help answer any questions you may have.
4 Whats Inside
What is inside of the Griffith Observatory is equally as impressive as what is in the sky. They have so many interesting exhibits that show you how the solar system works, telescopes, ect. We went their waiting for the awesome night-time view and received so much more. I am always game for an impromptu educational moment. Several of the exhibits were hands on, which made it all the more fun. Oh, and for future reference, some of the exhibits needed the sun to be out, so going during day-time hours would be needed.
5 Samuel Oschin Planetarium
I personally find planetarium very interesting. The shows are educational and you get to view it in a way that you normally don’t view films. The films only last about 45-minutes, so perfect of kiddos are in tow. If you have a child that is 5, then you can only view the first show of the day. The shows are cheap, ranging from $3-$7/show! They offer about 4 shows currently, and is presented by a live, knowledgeable story-teller.
Griffith Observatory needs to be a MUST-SEE when traveling to Los Angeles. Totally worth going to. Beautiful area, gorgeous view, educational and fun. We had a blast and I can tell you that you will have the same.
